Free Access to American Civil War records at Fold3 until 18 July 2021

To commemorate the historic Battle of Gettysburg, Fold3 is giving free access to its American Civil War collection until 18 July 2021. The collection includes service records, pension files, casualty lists and more.

You will need a free account or you can sign in with your Ancestry user name and password (as I did). Click here to go to the correct landing page at Fold3. Search for a name and you will be prompted to either log-in to Fold3 (if you already have an account) or enter your Ancestry log-in details.

This is a generous two week period to search the records for free. Maybe this time I'll find Michael Wallace Lynch, my first cousin three times removed. Given his age, I feel he would very likely have been caught up in the civil war. He emigrated with his parents from Bosnetstown, County Limerick to New York State when he was five years old and was a young man of enlistment age during the war.

A quick general search in the Fold3 records returned 2,000+ civil war records for people named Michael Lynch so I will need the two weeks free period to wade through them and see if I can narrow them down to a short list of potentials.

Good luck with your research and do let me know if you have any luck finding family members among the collection.
